Roanoke's Newest Theatre

The Star City Playhouse is like no other theatre in the world. It is a completely self-funding, training theatre devoted to people who love to act and to an audience who wants to see plays written by grownups to be seen by grownups.

The Star City Playhouse is a small, family run business, built and operated by a retired New York Equity Actor and his beloved wife and partner, Karon Sue Semones, a Roanoke native and a graduate of Hollins University.

The Star City Playhouse is located on Williamson Road in the old Pete Moore warehouse beside the French Thistle, one block from the New Yorker Deli. Within the old warehouse are five apartments and two large commercial spaces, the rents from which carry the Playhouse. We neither receive nor solicit funding from government agencies nor do we cost the taxpayer any money.

Classic Plays

Theatre's main entrace.

We concentrate on the best plays of the last hundred years. In America especially, the first sixty years of the twentieth century represent a flowering of excellent theatre work. Please see our past performances.

These plays were also the training ground for all the greatest actors of the past hundred years, the place where they learned their craft. That is one of our chief purposes: to pass on the best of the acting craft.

Broadway's Best at Yesterday's Prices

Our second chief purpose is to bring fine theatre to everyone in the Roanoke Valley at a reasonable price: $10 a ticket and $6 for seniors and students. Call us at (540) 366-0060 for reservations. We do not take reservations through the web site.

We're looking forward to meeting you!

Developing New Talent

We believe actors learn their craft by acting. We love discovering new natural talent. Even if you have not acted before, please attend our annual audition. Part of every production effort at the Star City Playhouse is developing new talent.

Volunteers Needed

Call (540) 366-0060 to volunteer your theatrical talents. Actors, stage managers, lighting crew, house crew, stage hands and artists are welcome. Actors need not sing as we do not perform musicals. Costumes and directing are handled by the owners.

Lobby Art Gallery

Area artists are invited to submit work for display in our Lobby Art Gallery. There is no charge to do so, but we do ask that there be no political or religious theme as we're a neutral non-profit and family oriented. Please call the theater, (540) 366-0060, and leave a message to make an appointment. We retain the right to select works for display.
